U.S. & Global Export Controls & Sanctions Leader

Steven Brotherton is a Principal and leads the Global Export Controls & Sanctions service line at KPMG. In this role, he leads a team of export control and sanction professionals to assist multinational clients with complex export control and sanction issues. Steven works with clients to develop and operationalize compliance programs, support internal reviews and investigations, conduct export classifications, prepare license applications, perform audits, and design training programs. He regularly teams with clients to provide innovative solutions, including bringing leading edge technology solutions such as Artificial Intelligence and bots to trade compliance programs.

Appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Steven has served two terms on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Regulations and Procedures Technical Advisory Committee, which advises the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security on export control regulation and policy.

Steven’s past experience includes serving as a Partner at an AmLaw 100 and Global 100 law firm where he led the Export Controls & Sanctions practice. Steven has written extensively on various export control issues, and is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences.

He holds a BS degree from Auburn University and a JD degree from University of Alabama School of Law.
